The honest answer: don't only think about Pompeii
Most people searching for where to stay near Pompeii are about to spend one of their most memorable days inside the 79 AD ruins — and then realise they have four or five other days to fill. Pompeii town itself (Pompei Scavi) is geared almost entirely around the archaeological park: a handful of hotels, restaurants near the gates, and not much reason to linger after closing time.
The better question is: what base lets me see Pompeii easily and still reach Naples, the islands, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast? For that, the western side of the Bay of Naples — and specifically Pozzuoli — is one of the best-value, least-crowded answers in Campania.
In short: Pompeii is a ~25–30 minute drive from Pozzuoli. Staying on the Pozzuoli waterfront keeps the ruins within easy reach while putting central Naples (~20 min by metro), the ferry port for Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the Campi Flegrei right on your doorstep.
Travel times to Pompeii & Herculaneum from Pozzuoli
| Destination | By car | By public transport |
|---|---|---|
| Pompeii (Pompei Scavi) | ~25–30 min | Metro/train via Naples + Circumvesuviana |
| Herculaneum (Ercolano) | ~30 min | Circumvesuviana from Naples |
| Mount Vesuvius | ~40 min | Car or organised shuttle recommended |
| Naples city centre | ~25 min | ~20 min by metro (Line 2) |
The fastest route to the ruins is usually by car along the Tangenziale. By public transport, the classic approach is the Circumvesuviana railway, which runs along the Vesuvius side of the bay and stops directly at both Pompei Scavi and Ercolano Scavi.
Why a Pozzuoli base beats staying in Pompeii town
- One base, the whole region. From the Gulf of Naples waterfront you can do Pompeii one day, Capri or Procida the next by ferry, the Amalfi Coast another, and Naples in the evening — without changing accommodation.
- You see the bay, not a car park. Pompeii-town hotels are functional. A waterfront penthouse looking out at Capri, Procida and Ischia is a different kind of evening.
- Fewer crowds, better value. Pozzuoli is a real, lived-in Italian town with an authentic seafront fish market and restaurants — not a tour-bus stop. Prices and atmosphere reflect that.
- Genuine transport links. Metro Line 2 to central Naples, ferries from the Pozzuoli port, and quick motorway access to the Vesuvius side.
A practical plan for the Pompeii day
- Arrive early — gates open in the morning and the site is largest and hottest by midday. Go early to walk the streets before the tour groups.
- Pair it with Herculaneum if you have energy: it is smaller, more intimate and remarkably well preserved.
- Consider Vesuvius in the afternoon for the view back over the bay (check crater access and weather first).
- Return to the waterfront for sunset over the islands — the reward for an early start.
