Day Trips from the Gulf of Naples

One waterfront base, the whole bay. Islands by ferry, ruins by train, the Amalfi Coast by road — here is how to see it all without ever repacking.

The case for one base

The Bay of Naples packs more world-class day trips into a small radius than almost anywhere in Italy. The mistake travellers make is hopping hotels — a night in Sorrento, a night near Pompeii, a night on Capri — and losing half of every transition day to logistics. Pick one well-connected waterfront base and the region opens up without the friction.

From the Pozzuoli side of the bay you have a ferry port for the islands, Metro Line 2 into central Naples, and fast motorway access to the Vesuvius side. That combination is what makes a single base work.

The islands — Capri, Procida & Ischia

Procida is the pastel-coloured, low-key one and an easy short hop. Ischia is bigger, green, and known for thermal spas. Capri is the famous one — go early, see the town and the views before the midday rush, and head back as the day-trippers pile in.

Pompeii & Herculaneum

Two of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, both on the Vesuvius side of the bay. Pompeii is vast; Herculaneum is smaller and more intimate. Many travellers pair the two or combine one with Vesuvius. See the dedicated where to stay near Pompeii guide for the practical plan.

Mount Vesuvius

A drive plus a walk to the crater rim, weather and access permitting, rewarded with a sweeping view back over the whole bay. Best paired with Pompeii or Herculaneum below it.

The Amalfi Coast

Positano, Amalfi and Ravello along a UNESCO-listed coast road. It is about an hour by car and makes a long but spectacular day — go early to beat the coastal traffic.

Naples city centre

Twenty minutes on the metro: the Archaeological Museum, Spaccanapoli, and the birthplace of pizza. Easy to do in an afternoon or evening from the bay.

New to the area itself? Start with the Pozzuoli travel guide to understand the base these day trips run from.
